On May 22, 2011, a painting by Qi Baishi accompanied by his calligraphy couplet in seal script, which was originally a gift to Chiang Kai-shek (then President of the Republic of China) for his 60th birthday in 1946, was sold in Beijing at 425.5m yuan ($65.5m). This is a new auction record for contemporary Chinese artworks.
