Yellow Oranges and Green Tangerines (橙黃桔綠圖)

Zhao Lingrang (趙令穰, fl. ca.1070- after 1100), Song Dynasty (960-1279)

Album leaf, ink and color on silk, 24.2 x 24.9 cm, National Palace Museum, Taipei

This fan painting is based on a poem by Su Shi (蘇軾, 1037-1101), For Liu Jingwen (贈劉景文).

       The lotus exhausted,
             their umbrellas folded,
        The chrysanthemum withered,
their branches standing proudly in frost.
        You must remember,
the best scenery of the year,
        Is exactly now,
when oranges turn yellow and tangerines green.

       荷盡已無擎雨蓋,菊殘猶有傲霜枝。一年好景君須記,正是橙黃橘綠時。
